Event: The Impact of Gender Diversity on the Use of Digital Technologies Within the Human Rights Sector [RightsCon 2021]

Friday, June 11, 2021 | 08:30 EDT | 13:30 BST | 21:30 KST | Register here

A growing number of human rights defenders advocate for applying an intersectional and gender lens to current human rights practices. At RightsCon 2021, we will chair a panel of five leading practitioners and technologists to examine potential gender biases implicit in or resulting from the digital technologies and practices of human rights organisations.

Join us to learn, expand on or challenge any of the following questions with the speakers: How does gender diversity within human rights organisations impact their prioritisation and deployment of digital technologies for human rights investigations and advocacy? What is the current status and dialogue on gender diversity in the tech community and how does that feed into or influence, both positively and negatively, the human rights sector who use the tools? Whose voices have more visibility and authority within organisations and the sector as the human rights field becomes more embedded in technology? Which agendas, use cases, and violations are prioritised or made more visible? How can we mitigate bias to make human rights investigations more inclusive?

This panel hopes to make these complex discussions accessible to all participants. Participants are encouraged to contribute their thoughts and questions regardless of their familiarity and experience with digital technologies in human rights investigations and advocacy.
